The Omnivorous Alphabet
Writers in the Schools (WITS) is a comprehensive program that cultivates young writers and supports Oregon authors through semester-long writing residencies in the Portland public high schools. WITS employs poets, fiction writers, essayists and playwrights to engage students in reading and writing across the curriculum.
WITS offers a host of literary services including:
–15-day writing workshops in high school classrooms
–One-day visits by local and touring authors
–Mentorships for students to work one-on-one with writers
–Faculty writing workshops and professional development for teachers
–Books for classrooms and school libraries
–Public student readings at local bookstores and cafés
–Annual student anthologies
–Discount student tickets to Portland Arts & Lectures events
Writers in the Schools currently serves all Portland public high schools and several alternative programs. During 2007/2008 WITS served 73 classes with 25 writers, reaching over 2,600 Portland Public High School students.
