About

Writers in the Schools (WITS) is a comprehensive program that cultivates young writers and supports Oregon authors through semester-long writing residencies in the Portland public high schools. WITS employs poets, fiction writers, essayists, graphic novelists and playwrights to engage students in reading and writing across the curriculum.

The Writers in the Schools (WITS) Program of Literary Arts places professional writers into Portland Public High Schools and several alternative high school programs to teach semester-long creative writing residencies. In 2008-2009 WITS placed 23 writers in 62 classrooms.

Professional writers inspire students by modeling the writer’s life. During a WITS residency, students generate new writing, learn strategies for and practice revision, and publish their writing through public readings and online and print publications. Writers also give students regular written feedback on their work.

WITS also provides mentoring to small groups of students, coordinates author visits to high schools, and donates books to classrooms and libraries.
